If Only the Government was an Individual......
“Naomba serikali isaidie (I am pleading for Government’s help)”, is a phrase that has been heard so many times in this country. It is a phrase that has been used in all manner of situations when my fellow citizens are in problems or ‘problems’. The term has been very common to an extent that it now part of ringtones. Sometimes I feel we plead for Government’s help even in situations we can tackle on our own. For example, my people from this part of the country were pleading for government’s help because they didn’t have vegetables in dry season. I found it unnecessary because just below their lands were streams flowing with water. All my fellow brethren could do was to build a shade for their vegetables and fetch water 200meteres away to water them. So my question was, ‘What is the government supposed to do for them?”. Send a troop to go fetch water for them? Send people to put up shades? What exactly was expected to be done by the government?.

The Government is just an entity. You can’t really
pin point like “Peter help me or Jane help me’. I do not dispute that we need
to seek Government’s help in situations but I think if we wait for the Government
to do everything for us we may wait for too long, and we may miss out on what
God has in store for us. In the Bible, in the book of Exodus Moses complained
to God that he was not good enough to go and save the children of Israelites. He
wondered what would make the Israelites and Pharaoh believe that he had been
sent by God. God asked him what He had in his hand and he said a rod (Exodus
4:1-2). God used Moses’ rod to perform miracles before Pharaoh and Israelites.
He touched the Red Sea with the rod and water separated so that Israelites
could cross over (Exodus 14:16). He struck the rock in the wilderness and forth
came water for Israelites to drink (Numbers 20:11). We always have something in
our lives that we can use to make our lives better. If it is a dry season and
you have a stream near you, use it to water your vegetables and you will have
plenty of food on your table.
I
have high regards for the government and its authority especially for the fact
that God expects me to respect it. “Let
every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority
except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God” (Romans 13:1
ESV). However, I think I depending solely on the Government for my daily
problems will not make survive in this world. We all vote in a particular
Government with expectations that our living standards will improve i’e
increased employment, lower taxes, improved infrastructure, increased security,
among others. But the Government is composed of individuals who are human
beings just like me. They have their own weaknesses and interests just like any
other being. Some of these individuals fail to honor their word of working for
the people and instead pursue their own self interests.
We’ve seen in the media where the
police who have a duty to protect us citizens steal from us and sleep on their
jobs. The Government which needs to ease our burdens increase and introduce
more taxes. The leaders who should care for us and increase our living
standards grab our lands. So where does our help come from? Psalms 121:1 “I
lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from?”. Here is
the answer to our problems: Psalms 121:2 “My help comes from the Lord, the
Maker of heaven and earth.
I still have a question, What if the
government was an individual or a person? What would be his or her roles, what
would the citizens do him or her?

I think if the government was a person he would have quit long ago due to stress
